Options for gay tourists in Buenos Aires
This is my subjective view of the options for gay tourists in Buenos Aires looking to connect with the local gay scene. It is based on my observations over the last 15 months and discussions with other gay friends and tourists. Of course these are generalisations and should by no means be taken as gospel.
If you are young and drop-dead gorgeous you are going to connect anywhere; lucky you! For the rest of us no longer in the full bloom of youth and not blessed with stunning looks we have to be that bit smarter. If you come to Buenos Aires single and unattached it is probable you won’t hook up with a Porteño (local name for someone from the Capital). They are generally not interested in gringo tourists (unless they are taxi boys – local name for escorts) as they have plenty of choice among their own. Also there is the language barrier and unless you have reasonably good Spanish and a grip on the local idiomatic idiosyncrasies and accent you will be struggling. Of course there are some Argentinos that do speak English but they are in a minority.
So if you go to a bar or disco on your own you will generally be just supping your drink and admiring the male scenery. However don’t let me put you off going. A good choice for a bar for just this pastime is Sitges (Cordoba 4119) from midnight or The Sub (Cordoba 543) from 2 am. The Titanic Club (Callao 1156) has a strip show every night some time after midnight. One of the nicest places I have found and where I take friends is the small restaurant/showbar Chueca (Soler 3283). The food is good and not too expensive, if you eat you get a table with a view of the stage, the drag show at about 12:30 am has plenty of visual humour which doesn’t require a great knowledge of Spanish, and there is plenty of male scenery to admire. Also it is a very short walk to the discos Glam and Amerika. The showbar Search (Azcuenaga 1007) gets packed about 1 am and the show has drag mime, strippers and stand-up comedy. It is unlikely you will appreciate this last unless your Spanish is good but it is obviously hilarious to the locals. Watch out for taxi boys in the crowd looking for clients.
If you haven’t got the message yet then you should be aware that the gay scene starts late and goes on very late. Very little happens before midnight. The one exception I know is the bar Flux (Marcelo T de Alvear 980) run by Jamie (UK) and Ilia (Russia) which opens early evening.
Going on to the subject of discos, the first thing to say is that there is a great shortage of gay discos since the tragic fire of 30th December 2004. The principal disco Amerika has yet to re-open because of a dispute with neighbours. Consequently there is an excess of demand over supply, particularly on Saturday night with resultant queues to enter. Glam (Cabrera 3046) has quite a young crowd and only has short queues to enter. Palacio (Alsina 940) has a slightly more mature and better-off clientele and again the queues are reasonably short. Angel’s (Viamonte 2168) has an appalling queuing problem so you need to be determined to get in here. It is good if you like Latin music but it is disliked by many Porteños as the crowd there is a rung or two lower on the social ladder, there are usually darker-skinned guys from the Andean countries there, and transvestites too. (Discrimination is alive and well here.) However Angel’s does have a very busy and active back room.
This brings me on to the places where you can go for some anonymous action. The star in this category has to be Tom’s (Viamonte 638) which to call popular is a slight understatement. Alternatively there is Water Club (Uriburu 1018) with its very spacious toilet area. The other places for this kind of fun are the porno cines of which there are lots around the city. The cines show both straight and gay hard porn and there is male-male action going on in the darker corners regardless of genre. Box (Laprida 1423) and Ideal (Suipacha 378) are two of the most popular. Once Plus (Ecuador 54) has Peruvians and Bolivians.
There are only three saunas in the city and only one is really worth visiting with the odd name of A Full (Viamonte 1770). It is bigger and far better equipped than the others. Nevertheless it is far from perfect having discourteous and lazy staff. Olimpo (Viamonte 723) is much smaller and not as nice, and there may be some taxi boys in there. Unikus (Pueyrredon 1180) is small, poorly equipped and used by older men.
For opening days and times of all these places you need to look out for the magazines and periodicals available either on sale in kiosks or at the different gay places. The principal magazine is Imperio G on sale at kiosks for $5 pesos. (NX is not published any more.) There is another small guide called La Otra Guia which costs $2 pesos at kiosks but is free at bars. There is a free tabloid-size paper called Queer, and a small pocket size guide called G-maps (has a useful map) available at some gay places.
Finally a few word about the commercially-available guys in Buenos Aires. You can encounter taxi boys on the streets, usually from about 11 pm, on the even-numbered side of Avenida Santa Fe between Puerreydon and Callao, on the odd-numbered side of Marcelo T de Alvear between the same streets and on side streets around. Their price for an hour of fun starts around $50 pesos. These taxi boys are very dangerous and may be robbers or worse. If you take off with one of these then on no account take him to your hotel or apartment. Go instead to an Albergue Transitorio; he is sure to know of one nearby. Be sure to agree exactly what you are going to pay for; there will be a big addition for any impromptu extras. Check your belongings before you leave. A much superior option is to go to the web site Soy Tuyo (I am yours) which can be found at http://www.soytuyo.com/ You will find they are invariably very good looking and there are plenty that speak some English. Prices start at around $150 pesos but these guys are vetted and screened, and professional so you can safely invite one to your hotel room and be sure of a good service. The supplement called Ratones published with the magazine Imperio G has a good display of what is commercially-available.

Shopping for leather clothes and accessories
You may purchase leather products in any of the numerous shops that line Florida street in Microcentro, or you can venture out a bit off the beaten path by going to the leather district in Villa Crespo.
Take a cab to Scalabrini Ortiz and Murillo, or take Subte Line B to Malabia.
The stores are mostly along blocks 500 and 600 of Murillo street and streets off there with about 30 stores within three blocks of each other. Here are some web sites to whet your interest; the first one has a useful map.

Conversations with some recent visitors to the city revealed that not everyone is aware of that very useful and seemingly essential facility, the albergue transitorio. These are hotels with rooms for rent for periods of two to three hours, or maybe more.
A room will cost from about $25 to $40 pesos (US$8 - US$13) for the period and are usually very comfortable and well-equipped with large double bed, shower and toilet, and may contain television showing topical videos, mirrored walls and ceiling, jacuzzi, maybe a water-bed, and are invariably very clean.
In the Barrio Norte district there seems to be an albergue transitorio every other block and there are certainly some in every district. They are listed as such in Paginas Amarillas (Yellow Pages) and there also web-sites with listings.
For some years now there has been a city law that these hotels cannot refuse entry to same-sex couples.
If you should make a new friend in a bar or disco, or on the street it would be extremely foolhardy and dangerous to invite that person back to your apartment or hotel. Instead the albergue transitorio will provide the necessary privacy and comfort at relatively little cost. It is very probable that your new friend will know of one nearby.
